- <p> No longer welcome on treaties or tax bills, the name GEORGE
- BUSH still means something on the pages of the Sporting News.
- Over the past few months the managing editor of the weekly,
- based in St. Louis, Missouri, has been trying to persuade the
- former Yale first baseman to write for the paper. Last week,
- to the surprise of subscribers, the ex-President appeared as
- a guest columnist. In a piece that begins, "Well, as a little
- kid, I hated broccoli, but I loved baseball," Bush waxes nostalgic
- about his lifelong passion for America's favorite pastime. "What
- I haven't lost is the `feeling,"' he writes. Even though "my
- participation is now limited to throwing out the first pitch
- on Opening Day or eating a Dome Dog in the Astrodome." Payment
- for his inspired prose will consist of a donation to the charity
- of his choice.
